In an over-saturated music market it is becoming increasingly difficult to sift through the haystack of pretenders for a genuinely intriguing, passionate band injecting some much-needed attitude in a scene lacking in personality.

Lanarkshire band The Lafontaines provide this in spades. The enthusiastic group purvey hip-rock dipped in tartan paint, in keeping with the recent revival of the colloquial accent in music, and their native twist on a distinctly American concept has spliced an of-the-moment genre with conventional bar chords and catchy choruses.

They have been on the periphery of the much-coveted industry radar for a while now without ever being appropriately heralded, but interest continues to grow and kudos is being amassed from a variety of sources.

The group consist of beat-boxing front-man Kerr Okan, Anna Smith, Iain Findlay, drummer Jamie Keenan and Darren McCaughey, and they have recently stepped up their bid for acclaim with the release of their latest EP.

Peter Dickson, voice-over guru extraordinaire from the likes of X Factor and E4, provides a booming message of endorsement as the introduction to their live shows. Okan is the focal point of every performance, building a rapport with the audience not only with his razor-sharp wit, but with the tenacity of his vocal and his brutal take on modern life. This translates skilfully to their record, which captures the essence of their live shows.

The remaining quartet ably build songs around his tirades, ensuring that they can be streamlined into the popular consciousness with relative ease, and their adeptness for their instruments allows the songs to flow comfortably, allowing Okan to maintain his unpredictability.

‘Superstar’ and ‘Vulcan’ are particular standout songs from their MySpace site, but the performance and outlook in general is impressive – they have sidestepped numerous clichés in creating their vision, and everyone connected with this project seems to be thoroughly enjoying themselves.

A recent headline slot at Glasgow’s Classic Grand was well received, and with a number of gigs across Scotland over the coming months, their reputation looks set only to increase.

Classic Grand Review

With revellers heading to the SECC to take in the Homecoming Show, the Classic Grand venue offered a suitable alternative in the form of emerging Motherwell five-piece The LaFontaines.

The enthusiastic group purvey hip-rock dipped in tartan paint, in keeping with the recent revival of the colloquial accent in music, and their native twist on a distinctly American concept has spliced an of-the-moment genre with conventional bar chords and catchy choruses.

They have been on the periphery of the much-coveted industry radar for a while now without ever being appropriately heralded, but interest continues to grow, and Saturday evening represented a headline show in a well-respected setting.

Peter Dickson (The X Factor Voice Bloke to you and me) booms his message of endorsement, and they arrive onstage to a rapturous reception from a healthy audience. Vocalist Kerr Okan is the focal point of their musical onslaught, and he comfortably cements a rapport with the crowd as they surge through a blistering set.

Okan, sporting a blinding yellow t-shirt, verbalises his contempt for contemporary life and is utterly believable as he spouts his candid views. Kudos is immeasurably added, however, in the accessibility of the songs; the remaining quartet ably builds songs around his tirades, ensuring that that they could be streamlined into the popular consciousness with relative ease.

‘Superstar’ and ‘Vulcan’ are particular standouts, but the performance and outlook in general is impressive – it would be easy for this Frankenstein approach to music to be sodden in familiar clichés, however it sounds fresh and inviting while maintaining a razor sharp edge.

‘Rap is just for people who can’t sing’ cries Okan, but it is the only self-deprecating lyric in what is a hugely confident show.

Yo and welcome to our very first blog(sorta).

Tbh we have always been rather gash at these sort of things, but with so much going on over the last few months to present day, we sort of owe it to you to keep you in the loop!

These blogs will be updated on a weekly basis, or as and when new shit happens! They will have exclusive pics, videos and anything random enough to find its way in. We recently purchased a digital cam, because in all honesty wayyyy to much funny shit happens when we hit the road! So would be cool for you guys to see it and comment on the crack. I will also be hopefully starting to interview random bands, acts people we play with, so please if you have any inappropriate questions make sure you send them in cause that’s the idea!

We will try and make this as active as possible, sort of like a forum I suppose only without all the shite that comes with that.
